Raúl Álvarez believes film triggers change. After 32 years of film-making experience in many fields, he completes his directorial debut in documentary and his most personal project yet: “Land Awakening”, a feature length exploration on our relationship to the Land.
Born in Mexico City, Raúl came to Canada in 1978 to complete a B.A. degree in Communications and Film-making at Concordia University in Montreal. His film career took off immediately when his graduation documentary on the centennial of the Oka Monastery near Montreal – which he Edited and Assisted the Director – was picked up by the CBC and aired nationally.
Raúl returned to Mexico where he traveled across the country managing production of ethnographic documentaries and educational TV. Then followed an extremely diverse and productive career ranging from TV commercials and documentaries, to TV series and feature-length films. Raúl created a TV commercial production company. Later in this period, he executive produced a mayor TV advertising campaign for a world event and acted as second and first Assistant Director on both international and national feature films productions, as well as an international current affairs TV special.
Back to Canada since 1996, Raúl founded a post-production company in Ottawa and continued as freelance Video Editor on numerous short and feature-length documentaries and TV series for mayor Canadian broadcasters, and for the War Amps of Canada among many others.
Since 2006, Raúl has devoted to independent documentary film projects with a social agenda. “I aim that my work will have a significant and profound mark on society, creating projects engaged in social change, developing awareness about the environment, and telling positive stories that promote spirituality, fairness and peace.”
